How to Play TagPro

The rules, the objective, and the one rule that confuses everyone.

TagPro is a free capture-the-flag game that runs in your browser: two teams of four control balls on a top-down map, and you score by carrying the enemy flag back to your own flag โ€” first team to 3 captures wins.

A full capture: grab the enemy flag, run it home, touch your own flag, and the score ticks over.

What are the controls?

Arrow keys or WASD. That's the entire control scheme.

There's no jump, no shoot and no aim. You steer a ball with momentum โ€” you'll slide, overshoot and bounce off walls. That's the game.

Why can't I capture the flag?

You can only capture if your own flag is at home.

If the enemy has stolen your flag, carrying theirs into your base does nothing. You have to wait for a teammate to pop their carrier and return your flag first.

A carrier reaches its own base while its own flag is missing and nothing happens. The flag returns, and the same ball captures.

What happens when you get popped?

Run into an enemy while you're carrying their flag and you pop. Run into a spike and you pop. You respawn in your base after 3 seconds.

Popping is normal. Good players pop constantly. It costs you three seconds, not the game.

What should you actually do in your first game?

Teams work best as 2 on offense, 2 on defense. Say which one you're taking in team chat before the game starts โ€” it takes a second and stops everyone crowding the same job.

  • On offense: go to their base, grab their flag, bring it home. Don't grab and immediately die โ€” wait for your partner so one of you can keep the pressure on.
  • On defense: stay near your flag. When someone takes it, chase them down and pop them to return it. Your team can't score until you do.

What should you pick up early?

  • Power-ups matter more than you'd think. Three of them, scattered around the map, 20 seconds each. Games are routinely decided by who's collecting them. What each one does โ†’
  • Learn the tiles. Speed pads, spikes, gates, buttons and bombs are all over every map, and a few of them will kill you. Every map element โ†’
