How to Play Defense in TagPro

Containing, chasing, cutting angles, and owning the power-ups.

Defense is about taking away the enemy carrier's exits — contain and cut angles instead of lunging, because a missed lunge is a guaranteed capture.

Left: a lone defender lunges at the carrier, gets juked, and the carrier escapes. Right: two defenders close the escape lanes and squeeze out the return.

Where should you stand?

Not on the flag. Sitting on the flag tile is the weakest spot on the map: you're stationary, and an attacker with speed bumps you off and grabs through your immunity window.

Patrol the entry lane instead, keeping some speed, so you meet the grabber with momentum rather than from a standstill.

Should you lunge at the carrier?

No. Contain.

Lunging is a coin flip: hit and you return the flag, miss and they're through you with nobody left behind. Containing takes away their exits until they run out of room or a teammate arrives.

How do you chase properly?

Cut the corner. Never follow their path. Aim at where the carrier will be, not where they are — following the trail means you're permanently a ball-length behind.

Two chasers: one follows the carrier's exact path and falls behind, the other cuts the angle and intercepts.
  • Get ahead of the carrier if you can. Between them and their base beats behind them every time.
  • Use boosts to close the gap, but line them up first — they fire you along your current direction.
  • If a teammate is already ahead, don't both chase. One contains, one covers the base.

Grab D or no-grab D?

How do you control power-ups on defense?

  • Rolling Bomb is the strongest defensive pickup: blast the attackers out of your base, or survive the hit that would have popped you.
  • TagPro turns you into a no-go zone. Park near the flag and anything that touches you dies.
  • Deny spawns. If you can't use a power-up near your base, take it anyway so the attackers can't.
  • Track the 60-second respawn and call it out. Power-up timings →

Use the map against them

  • Waste boosts that point at your flag before the enemy reaches them.
  • Hold buttons properly — in front of the button, not on top of it, so a bump doesn't kill your teammate in the gate.
  • Never detonate a bomb near your own carrier.
